Gunmen opened fire on a car carrying three Iranian embassy staff in Baghdad overnight, wounding them and their Iraqi driver.
The embassy staff were on their way to visit a local shrine.
Iraqi police confirmed the attack but did not have any further details or say who they thought could be behind it.
Iran's official IRNA news agency has blamed the US military.
A US military spokesman in Baghdad said the allegation was "completely ridiculous" as the US was "not in the business of assassination."
While most Gulf states have no permanent representatives in Baghdad, Iran is one of the few countries with an embassy in Iraq.
Many diplomats have stayed away from the country since the Egyptian ambassador was kidnapped and a suicide car bomber attacked the Jordanian embassy in 2003.
