Eugene, Ore. - The No. 10 Washington men's tennis team defeated their northwest rival, No. 75 Oregon, 6-1 at the University of Oregon's Student Tennis Center. The Huskies are now 1-1 when playing Pac-10 schools, however both matches do not count toward the team's overall conference standings. Washington moves to an 8-2 record on the season tallying their 110th win over the ducks in the all-time series record.

The Huskies have recovered from dropping the doubles team point in their two previous matches by winning two of the three doubles matches. Oregon jumped out to an early lead in with their number three doubles team defeating Washington's No. 37 Mike Ricks and Jean-Noel Insausti 8-3. The Dawgs rallied and took the next two matches. Juniors Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu playing number one doubles were the first to score for UW getting an 8-5 victory over Oregon's Arron Spencer and Markus Schiller. In the second doubles position, Klaus Jank and Andy Kuharszky clinched the team point, overcoming the Duck's Fernando Freitas and Thomas Bieri 8-6.

In singles Klaus Jank was the first to strike for Washington, winning a quick match, 6-1, 6-4, over Oregon's number six player Fernando Freitas. Insausti scored next for the Huskies in the third singles position, beating Arron Spencer 6-1, 6-3. Clinching the match in the fifth singles spot was co-captain Andy Kuharszky. Kuharszky played a tight first set with Gustavo Loza of Oregon, eventually winning in a tiebreaker, 7-6. After having won the tiebreaker without dropping a point, the UW sophomore went on to win the next six ensuing games.

In number two singles Pierre Metenier was forced to retire after winning the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(4). The reason for his early exit is at this time still undisclosed. Slovic and Daniel Chu rapped up the match with wins in the number one and four singles positions. Slovic beat his Markus Schiller in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(3). Chu went up a break in the first set and was able to hold at 6-3, however Oregon's Myrhed bounced back and won the second in a hard fought tiebreaker. Due to the fact that UW had clinched the match with four team points, the two teams decided to play a super tiebreaker to determine an outright winner. Chu was able to stay cool under pressure and win the tiebreaker with a score of 10-7.

The Dawgs will spend their weekend in Eugene, taking on the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday, February 23 at 3:00pm, the match will take place in the University of Oregon's Student Tennis Center. The neutral location should bring out the best play of both programs.
